One of The Lockport Tourism Pages
An interesting way to tour Lockport for the first time is to take a ride of "The Towpath Trolley." The vehicle is actually a bus, fashioned to look like an old-fashioned trolley (which Lockport used to have). It makes two tours of the Lockport area every day during the tourist season. There was new ownership for the trolley last year. An independent group called Friends of the Towpath Trolley is in charge of operation. The Towpath Trolley tour departs from 210 Market Street in Lockports Lowertown Historic District, next to the Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises facility. An approximate one hour tour of the city and part of the town start at 12:30PM each day (starting July 1st). The second departure is 3:00 PM. The tour is narrated featuring most of the significant sights in Lockport. The 2003 schedule is reduced over the operation of previous years, the length of the tour has been reduced, and the price has increased. It is no longer possible to get on and off the tour trolley and resume the tour on the next run through since there are only two runs daily. Below, that's the trolley itself, shown arriving at Lockport's Kenan Center, on the estate of the late William Rand Kenan Jr., off Locust Street.

The narrators on the Towpath Trolley have a script to read that was prepared by those in the know. When a narrator isn't available the bus driver doubles in this capacity. The narrator points out all the sights and bits of the history of Lockport as the bus moves from point to point around the city. With a good narrator the tour can be very informative and enjoyable.
The cost for the tour is $6 per day per person. There is a $3 charge for children. The trolley is operated by a not-for-profit corporation, Friends of the Towpath Trolley, Inc. Financial and control aspects of the corporation have not been provided to the Lockport Page but we do know that it is supported in part by tax dollars, grants from a local foundation, fund raising, advertising on the trolley, and fares.
The Trolley Leaves the Lockport Locks & Canal Tours site on Market Street, starting July 1st through August, twice daily at 12:30PM and at 3:00PM. This year the trolley operators have not provided us with a schedule of the stops so we can't advise you.
Not For Profit, But For Public Service.
